With the nights drawing in and the weather getting colder, it can be easy to let our healthy habits slip. Here are 5 healthy morning habits that you can do today to keep your fitness goals on track!


At this time of year it can be easy to hit the snooze button and hide under the duvet before rushing out the house on an empty stomach.  This might be okay for a one off, but if this starts to become your daily routine then it might be having a negative effect on the rest of your day and on you achieving your fitness goals. If this sounds like you, then it might be time get yourself some new healthy morning habits.


The 5 healthy morning habits we have listed below are easy to incorporate into your life and don’t take much time from your normal routine.


1. Drink a large glass of water

We spend around 6-8 hours in bed which means often we are not drinking anything. This can leave our bodies feeling dehydrated. By drinking a large glass of water first thing when you get up, not only does it rehydrate you, but it also wakes you up and gets your digestive system working. If you don’t like the taste of cold water first thing in the morning then try add juice of a lemon in some warm water instead. Try to have this glass of water before any food and especially before tea or coffee.


2. Move

Whether you choose to go for a run or to stay at home and do some yoga, try to spend time doing some kind of movement, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Working out in the morning really sets you up for the day and energises you. You are also more likely to stay on track with other healthy habits as you have started the day well.


3. Meal prep for the day

By having all your meals ready for the day, you don’t have to think about what you are going to eat when you are rushing around getting ready. You can grab your planned out meals from the fridge and go. This will prevent you grabbing quick, convenient foods that might not be so healthy or filling and will also stop you from buying unhealthy sugar snacks when you start to feel hungry. Whether you choose to meal prep on a Sunday or the night before, make sure you have it ready to go for the day.


4. Set an intention

Before you get out of bed, set an intention for the day. This could be something positive that you would like to do, how you would like to feel, or something you would like to achieve for the day. Maybe it is to stay positive when something stressful happens, to drink more water throughout the day, or to smile more. Remind yourself of your intention throughout the day. Setting an intention helps you to focus your attention more positively and helps you to decide how you would like your day to go.


5. Have a healthy breakfast prepared

Making your first meal of the day a healthy one will not only fill you up, but also give you energy for the rest of the day. Whether you like to eat first thing when you get up or practice intermittent fasting so eat later on, make sure you have it ready and prepared so you’re not tempted to make unhealthy choices. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated, something as simple as porridge or poached egg on toast is enough to fill you up and help you to concentrate. In a similar way to exercising, a healthy breakfast can keep you focused on your health and fitness goals throughout the day. You are more likely to eat healthily for the rest of the day if you make your first meal of the day a nutritious one.
